"Lingerie" comes from the Old French word "lingered" meaning clothing, and is defined as
lingerie and nightwear. In France, "underwear" is applied to all garments for both sexes. In the U.S. and England "lingerie" applies to women's underwear, exclusively designed to be erotic or pleasant to the eye, using the style of silk and lace, and does not apply to sensible cotton underwear.
The history of underwear.
The concept of lingerie that is pleasing to the eye is relatively recent. The glamor of underwear does not really begin until the 1960's. The concept of sexy underwear and began to develop the sexual revolution of the 1970s took off. Interestingly, 1960 also saw feminists burned their bras. The feminists were convinced that women's underwear were created "to impose control and order of the fair sex."
In the first half of the 20th century underwear of the women had 3 objectives: modesty, hygiene, and alter the female form through the use of corsets, girdles and bras. They were often big and bulky, extremely uncomfortable and often physical restraint. By the 1950's lingerie were becoming smaller and more tightly.
The corset. From 16 to 19 century, several devices are used to tighten the waist measures amazing women 16 to 17 inches. Note that Kate Moss, Jennifer Anniston and Heather Locklear whole list of their waist measurements as 23 inches. The hourglass shape of envy was achieved by compressing the body in half and literally transfer the meat from the waist to the chest and hips.
The Belt. During the 1920's the corset was gradually replaced by the waist. These were more comfortable and less extreme. The strip was considered an essential element for both respectability and modesty. The belt was designed to give a softer line more attractive to women. The bottom of the waist was engaging fasteners in socks to keep pace. For the 1960 the band was replaced by the panty girdle and then again through superior control.
The bra. There is some disagreement on when and who invented the bra. Mary Phelps Jacob held the first patent, February 12, 1914, containing the French word "brassiere". His invention was backless and fastened with straps that wrap around the body and tied in the front. It was designed for use with backless evening dresses, hiding the top of the corset in the front. However, before January 10.1876, a patent was filed by Olivia P. Flynt, who claim to be "specially designed as a bust support and improver."
Briefs. Underwear Aka, Smalls, Panties (USA), underwear (United Kingdom), shorts, pants, Gussie magnificent and scanties. Until the 1940's the sole purpose of "bloomers" was to protect and keep the clothes clean. It was not sexy or attractive and were only designed to be functional. Until the 1950's underwear covered parts of the thigh. When the thigh covers missing, the term U.S. the "panty" was created. However, these were big, wide, unattractive and white. Think "grandma panties." Gradually, the panty became more colorful and smaller, emerging string panties in 1960. Underwear became an icon of sexuality, when manufacturers began using satin, lace and silk.
